Did you know that older top loading washing machines generally use more water and energy, this is why more modern and energy efficient designs are front loaders. A washing machine will use 400-1300 watts. With a modern Energy start rated model using about 500 watts.
This simple formula calculates how much energy the average energy efficient 500 watt washing machine that is used for two hours, twice a week, will use over the course of a month.
Watts / 1000 x Hours x Days in Month = kWh
Example: 500 Watts / 1000 x 2 x8 = 8 kWh
An older washing machine that uses 1300 watts will consume the following amount of energy during the same period.
Watts / 1000 x Hours x Days in Month = kWh
Example: 1300 Watts / 1000 x 2 x 8 = 20.8 kWh
